Erin Wilcox
Excerpt:
I never knew your father, but when you arrived in Westhaven, I could have sworn my brother had risen from the Afterworld. Your loping gait, the ornate quiver of potions at your back, even the way you bent to smell a canyon blossom. It was all so familiar, like the dawning of a day I already lived and mourned. How could you know, how could I tell you of the half I’d lost, of the note folded at my breast I never got to answer, that I answer every day with rites of longing. You were only a man, a young one at that, a traveler come to us from Amis. All magework and barter halted in the square when you crossed the perimeter. Lars looked to my sentry post. I gave the sign of safety.I had no evidence you were not an agent of the Gur, except how you turned with Lars and looked up. I caught a glimpse of your high cheekbones, the slight thrust of your chest beneath your robes. No Gur priest could stand so transparent under my gaze. And so I let you in. A small gesture which could never be undone. It was to be my downfall and my saving grace.
