Excerpt

She forced herself to wait. Her mind kept stuttering away from the waiting and she'd find herself once again trying to plot and plan. Pointless, she told herself, it's pointless; wait for Constance, just wait. She knew she was in pieces but she tried to imagine those pieces as torn paper, fluttering in the air and then gently falling to rest on the ground. Rest. Wait. Breathe. But... but... A twitch and a twist and the pieces would be dancing in the air again, and her heart would flutter too, a cold paper sparrer blown against the Bakelite white of her ribcage.

- from The Boa Constrictor (the novel I wrote for the MA, not something I'll be working for the Write-a-thon)

Bio

I've been hooked on writing since taking part in NaNoWriMo in 2001, but never learned self-motivation. I am an alumna of the Clarion West class of '07, and in July '08 I will graduate from a Master's in Creative Writing program. I live in the UK on a train somewhere between one place and another. I own nothing of worth except a pair of jet earrings. To relax, I put a blanket over my head and listen to the wheels turning.

Writing Description

I aim for meaningful and elegant but tend to hit emotional and verbose. Genre-wise I'm usually somewhere between SF and dark fairytale; I might say slipstream, if it really meant anything.

Goals

I've been busy with the novel, so the stories have languished. Time to give them some love. I will edit and send out my stories from Clarion West last year, one a week, in the order I wrote them, and I will write at least one new story. I've also managed to let my friends down on the reading front over the past year, for various good-but-not-good-enough reasons, so I will complete the crits I have already in my in-pile, and I'm offering to do at least one new short story crit a week (for a donation from the crit-ee of whatever they think the crit was worth).

I'm aiming for around $100 from sponsorship and "bought" crits.
