Excerpt
When Madeleine was six, her parents disappeared and she went to live with her uncle in a big hollow house by the Pacific ocean.
Uncle Rusk was six-and-a-half feet tall and he wore black suits and black gloves. Dad wore things like jeans and ballcaps and funny T-shirts from the internet. When Uncle Rusk directed the movers to put every last bit of Mom and Dad's stuff into a back bedroom, they snapped to it. Then Uncle Rusk locked the door and -- Madeleine saw him do it from behind a chair -- swallowed the key.
Bio
I'm a 2006 grad and I live in Portland, Oregon, where I work as a face painter. My week four Clarion West story, "Moon at the Starry Diner," was in Heliotrope last winter and I have stories forthcoming in Strange Horizons and Helix. Lately I've been reading some stories for Rachel Swirsky and Ann Leckie (both CW '05) for Podcastle, which is lots of fun.
Publications
My CW week four story, "Moon at the Starry Diner," is available at Heliotrope.
Writing Description
I like the funny, lyrical, and bizarre.
Goals
I'm not good at setting goals in advance, and besides, I do a lot of face painting in the summer that might be heavier one week and lighter the next. So, during the WAT I'm going to set a goal at the beginning of each week. I'll post these goals on my blog. They might include: "Write a chapter of the current kids' novel; include a bear," or "Write 500 words and walk 2 miles each day," or "Write a picture book," or "Face paint a story onto an unsuspecting child." Lots of choices.
Every kindhearted person who sponsors me this summer will get a doodled thank-you in the mail from me. Examples of doodles I made while working very hard at CW can be found here.
