Weather report

Just a warning for the incoming students: even though the rest of the country is sweltering and suffering under an early heat wave, don't think that summer in Seattle will be warm. We have names for the months when you'll be here: June-uary and July-uary.

Bring a sweater. Bring a windbreaker. Bring a rainhat. Don't bother with the umbrella, because the rain is usually a mist rather than raindrops, and mist will sneak under the umbrella and soak you to the skin without you ever noticing it.

And bring your shorts and your sunscreen, too, because just when you think the sun will never come out, out it will come. Suddenly, you'll open all the windows. You'll want a fan. You'll see the mountains looking cool in the distance and you'll want to be there.

We're all looking forward to your arrival.

And don't be surprised if the expected Seattle summer leaves you melting on the sidewalk instead. (survivor of the Clarion West 2010 heatwave) Sandra
Any updates on the weather?
Charlie, during the first week, it was cold and rainy and hot and sunny, just like usual, with relatively random intervals between the two kinds of weather. If you think of the weather in Seattle as being much like the weather in the south of England, you won't go far wrong. Today, it's lovely, in the low-to-mid 70s (around 21-23 C), with wisps of streaky high clouds. It's supposed to stay that way all week. The week you'll be here, it's more likely to be 80-85ish (around 26-29 C), but could as easily be cold and rainy instead.
Hrm, I'm hoping for cold and rainy then. (26-29 degrees is *way* over my thermal comfort zone!)
Charlie, you may be in luck. While the rest of the US is sweltering, Seattle remains unseasonably cool, possibly all the way through your week here.
