On November 3, 2008, Nisi Shawl's Filter House was chosen one of the Best Books of 2008 by Publisher's Weekly. The judges' comment: "Shawl's exquisitely rendered debut collection weaves threads of folklore, religion, family and the search for a cohesive self through a panorama of race, magic and the body." Filter House was published in June 2009 by Aqueduct Press.

What goes in the essay?

I amy be overthinking things, but what belongs in the 7-800 word "description of your background and reasons for attending"?  I guess I'm thrown by it being "used to introduce you to the workshop's instructors".   Read more »

Challenge Grant from Amazon

In celebration of our 25th consecutive workshop, Amazon is donating one dollar to Clarion West for every dollar we receive from individuals, corporations, government offices, charitable foundations, and special events—up to $25,000. We have until October 31, 2009 to raise $25,000; Amazon’s grant can double that to $50,000.

If you'd like to make a donation to Clarion West for Amazon to match, visit our Donate page.  Read more »

As you may have heard, Apex Digest unleashed phase 3 of the Global Domination Plan upon the world recently, making the move to digital and upping pay rates to 5 cents/word. Overnight, our submissions doubled.  Read more »
